Shamrocks give up four in second in loss to Norwich

NORWICH – The Hespeler Shamrocks yielded four goals in the second period as they were downed 9-4 by the Norwich Merchants in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday night at the NOR-DEL Arena.

Hespeler opened the scoring in the second minute of the game, but Norwich responded with four in a row to take control. The Merchants led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 6-3 after the second.

Callum Harvey led Hespeler with a pair of goals while Matthew Diebolt and Owen Fischer scored once apiece. Tyler MacGillivary, Gavin Logher, Sam Gredig and Harvey each had one assist.

Hayden McLean tallied twice for Norwich while Jack Gee, Austin Forsyth, Kyle Brezinski, Reid Lazou, Jeremy Marsh, Brady Van Ymeren and Tanner Mitton each added single goals. Logan Partlo had two assists and Gee, Joel Storoschuk, Layne Cartwright, Marsh, Isaac Borges, Owen Koot, Nathan Da Silva, Parker Noble and Mitton each had one.

Brandon Snider started in net but was replaced by Joseph Clark at 1:22 of the second period after Norwich’s third goal. Snider had 12 saves and Clark, who took the loss, had 19. Carver Monroe had 24 saves to get the win in net for Norwich.

The teams each had a power-play goal, Hespeler on five power plays and Norwich on three.

The result leaves Norwich (4-9-1-1) and Hespeler (5-10-0-0) tied for fifth in the Doherty Division.

The game was the first of a three-in-three weekend for the Shamrocks, their second in as many weekends. They’re to play the Wellesley Applejacks (first at 11-2-1-0) at the Wellesley Community Centre Saturday at 7:45 p.m. and host the New Hamburg Firebirds (fourth at 9-4-1-0) at the Hespeler Memorial Arena Sunday at 3:30 p.m. The Shamrocks won one of the three games they played last weekend.
