Shamrocks knock off Hagersville for first win at home
CAMBRIDGE – The Hespeler Shamrocks picked up their first win on home ice this Provincial Junior Hockey League season and in the process they handed the Hagersville Hawks their first regulation-time loss of the season.
Hagersville has twice lost in overtime this season.
Hespeler scored midway through the third period for a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.
The teams had each scored a goal in the first period. The Shamrocks never trailed in the game as they opened the scoring before the match was two and a half minutes old. Hagersville replied 12 minutes later to create a deadlock that lasted until the 9:26 mark of the third.
Matthew Hayward and Kyle Wagner scored for the Shamrocks while Matthew Diebolt, Devin Schneider and Tony Tikel each had an assist.
Ben Huffman scored for Hagersville with help from Wesley Fritz and Ralph Taggart.
Hespeler outshot Hagersville 35-27 and neither team scored a power-play goal. The Shamrocks had two power plays and Hagersville had three.
Gavin McLeod picked up the win in net for Hespeler while Jamie Ferguson took the loss for Hagersville.
The win lifts the Shamrocks (5-9-0-0) into a tie for fifth with the Port Dover Sailors (4-9-1-1) in the Bloomfield Division. Hagersville (9-1-1-2) is second in the eight-team division.
The Shamrocks are to host the eighth-place Dunnville Mudcats (3-10-0-0) Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.
