Shamrocks on brink of elimination after third loss to Grimsby

CAMBRIDGE – The Grimsby Peach Kings scored three times in the second period to rally from an early deficit to down the Hespeler Shamrocks 4-1 in Provincial Junior Hockey League playoff action Sunday at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

The Shamrocks had scored the only goal of the first period while Grimsby had a single goal in the third.

The result gives Grimsby a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven Bloomfield Division semifinal.

Nick Donelle scored the game’s opening goal for the hosts at the six-minute mark of the first period. Josh Houston and Matthew Diebolt assisted on the goal.

Grimsby received goals from Mike Venditelli, Bailey Stumpo, Matt Schouppe and Jacob Balca. Dorion Maye had a pair of assists while London Murray, Maxime Pleau and Stumpo had one each.

The Shamrocks outshot the Peach Kings 40-33, but Hespeler was scoreless on seven power plays while Grimsby went 1-for-7 with a manpower advantage.

Gavin MacLeod had 29 saves in the Hespeler net while Riley Maskell had 39 saves for Grimsby.

Fourth game of the series is set for Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

If the Shamrocks win that game, the fifth game is to go Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Grimsby’s Peach King Arena.
