Shamrocks rally to top Norwich and halt skid

CAMBRIDGE – The Hespeler Shamrocks put the brakes on their five-game losing streak in the Provincial Junior Hockey League with a 6-4 victory over the Norwich Merchants Sunday afternoon at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

It was Hespeler’s first victory since they doubled the Burford Bulldogs 4-2 in their season opener Oct. 2 at Burford.

The Shamrocks rallied from a three-goal deficit to record the victory as they scored the final five goals of the game including the last two in the final three and a half minutes of the third period.

Norwich led 2-1 at the end of the first period and extended the lead with two goals in the first seven minutes of the second. Hespeler scored three times in the final five and a half minutes on the period including a pair six seconds apart in the final 11 seconds.

Tommy Zufelt scored twice for the Shamrocks while Gavin Logher, Braeden Tyler, Owen Fischer and Callum Harvey added single goals. Tyler had two assists while Fischer, Harvey, Brett Hartin, Noah Trudeau, Josh Houston and Matthew Diebolt each had one.

Norwich received single goals from Kyle Brezinski, Jack Gee, Austin Forsyth and Parker Noble while Layne Cartwright and Noble each had two assists and Joel Storoschuk and Forsyth had single assists.

The Shamrocks outshot Norwich 43-31 including a 22-12 advantage in the second period.

Hespeler went 1-for-3 on their power play and also scored two shorthanded goals while Norwich was scoreless on three power plays.

Joseph Clark had 27 saves to get the win in net for the Shamrocks while Wyatt Sloetjes took the loss despite making 37 saves for Norwich.

The win allowed Hespeler to leapfrog Norwich to move into fifth in the Doherty Division at 2-5-0-0. Norwich is sixth at 1-6-0-1. New Hamburg Firebirds lead at 6-0-1-0 and are followed by the Woodstock Navy Vets (5-0-2-0), Wellesley Applejacks (6-1-0-0), Tavistock Braves (5-3-0-0), Hespeler, Norwich and Burford (0-7-0-1).

The Shamrocks are to play New Hamburg at the Wilmot Recreation Complex Friday at 7:30 p.m. and host Burford Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.
