Shamrocks score first, but dropped by Mounties

CAMBRIDGE – The Hespeler Shamrocks scored the opening goal of the game, but surrendered five consecutive goals in a 5-1 loss in PJHL play at the Hespeler Memorial Arena Sunday.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period before Paris scored three goals in the second.

Will Curwen had a pair of goals for Paris while Tye Wetzel, Owen Switzer and Tyler Hill-Griffeon added single goals. Grant Eastwood had three assists while Brady McLaren and Cole Main had two apiece. Single assists went to Xavier Moura and Curwen.

The teams each took 36 shots while Paris went 1-for-3 on its power play and the Shamrocks were scoreless on five power plays.

Tyson Gustaw had 30 saves for Hespeler until being replaced by Jeremy Gignac for the final 9:34 of the game. Gignac stopped the lone shot fired his way.

Scott Rodrigue of the Mounties had 35 saves.

The Shamrocks are sixth in the Doherty Division at 5-26-3-1 and the Mounties are seventh at 4-27-2-2. Hespeler and Paris will finish sixth and seventh in the division with either team ahead.

The Shamrocks are to play the Tavistock Braves at the Tavistock and District Recreation Centre Friday at 7:30 p.m. and host the Woodstock Navy Vets Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
