Shamrocks score first, but Wellesley prevails

CAMBRIDGE – The Hespeler Shamrocks scored the opening goal of the game, but the Wellesley Applejacks scored every goal in the game after that one Wednesday night at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

Those other goals allowed Wellesley to claim a 5-1 victory in Provincial Junior Hockey League play.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the opening period as Wellesley scored 67 seconds after Hespeler’s goal. The Applejacks added two goals in the second period and two more in the third.

Andrew Fulton scored the goal for the hosts at 6:15 of the first. He had help from Callum Harvey and Owen Fischer.

Eric Lacey had a pair of third-period goals for Wellesley as Austin Stemmler, Isiah Katsube and Curtis Butler had scored earlier in the game. Mitch Penner collected two assists while Carson Wickie, Anthony Pede, Owen Lee, Conner Bradley, Connor Doerbecker, Kobe Seiling and Brady Brezynskie each had one.

Wellesley outshot the Shamrocks 35-17 including a 13-1 margin in the second period. The teams were each scoreless on four power plays and Wellesley’s Katsube failed to score on a penalty shot early in the second period.

Tyson Gustaw had 30 saves in net for Hespeler in his first outing with the Shamrocks. He had started the season with the Dundas Blues and had a 3-3-0 record. Will Crump had 16 saves for Wellesley.

The Shamrocks and Applejacks are to meet again Saturday at the Wellesley Community Centre. Game time is 7:45 p.m.
