Shamrocks slip by Dunnville in overtime

CAMBRIDGE – A goal by Kyle Wagner 61 seconds into overtime lifted the Hespeler Shamrocks to a 3-2 victory over the Dunnville Mudcats in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

The win was the second of the season for the Shamrocks and both were over Dunnville. There were seven losses in between the two wins.

After a scoreless first period, Dunnville netted the lone goal of the second and added another goal in the third before the Shamrocks scored twice in the final two and a half minutes of regulation time to force the overtime.

Wagner finished with two goals and an assist for Hespeler while Matthew Tonner scored the other goal. Others getting one assist apiece were David Biro, Joseph Tabet, Austin Reilly and Mitch Montgomery.

Connor Schmalz and Jake Anderson scored for Dunnville while Damian Garbutt and Branson Lynds had one assist apiece.

Dunnville outshot the Shamrocks 41-33. Hespeler went 1-for-4 on its power play while Dunnville went scoreless on seven power plays.

Noah Druissi made 39 saves in net for the Shamrocks to get the win while Dalton McBride took the loss for the Mudcats with 30 saves.

Hespeler is seventh in the eight-team Bloomfield Division at 2-7-0-0 while Dunnville is eighth at 0-7-0-2.

The Shamrocks are to play the Port Dover Sailors (4-6-0-0) at the Port Dover Arena Sunday at 2 p.m.
