Shamrocks to start series with Grimsby Wednesday night

CAMBRIDGE – The Hespeler Shamrocks are to begin their Provincial Junior Hockey League Bloomfield Division semifinal against the Grimsby Peach Kings Wednesday night at Grimsby’s Peach King Arena.

The Shamrocks finished the regular season fifth in the division at 15-19-5-3 for 38 points while Grimsby was tops in the division at 31-8-9-3 for 65 points.

Hespeler advanced to the divisional semifinals with a 4-1 victory over the fourth-place Dundas Blues in the quarter-finals, outshooting Dundas 21-18 in the process.

Grimsby reached the divisional semifinals by sweeping the eighth-place Dunnville Mudcats in four games. Grimsby outscored Dunnville 21-5 in the series.

The Peach Kings swept the six-game regular-season series with the Shamrocks, winning at Hespeler 4-2 Oct. 6, 4-1 Oct. 23 and 3-0 Jan. 5 and at Grimsby 3-0 Sept. 20, 3-2 Nov. 15 and 4-1 Jan. 17.

The Peach Kings are the reigning South Conference champs as they defeated the Wellesley Applejacks 4-2 in last year’s conference final.

Second game of the divisional semifinal is to go Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Grimsby while the Shamrocks are to host Game 3 Sunday at 3:30 p.m. and Game 4 next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., both at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

Games 5 (Feb 28. at Grimsby at 7:30 p.m.), 6 (March 1 at 3:30 p.m. at Hespeler) and 7 (March 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Grimsby) will be played only if they’re needed.
