Shamrocks top Norwich to put brakes on losing skid

CAMBRIDGE – The Hespeler Shamrocks struck for three consecutive goals to hand the Norwich Merchants a 4-1 setback Sunday afternoon in Provincial Junior Hockey League play at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

The Shamrocks broke a 1-1 tie with a goal midway through the first period and they added another goal midway through the second and an empty-netter with 39 seconds to go in the third to put an end to a five-game losing streak.

The Shamrocks received goals from Owen Fischer, Tommy Zufelt, Tyler MacGillivary and Matthew Hayward while Braeden Tyler assisted on three of the goals. Zufelt, Fischer, Hayward, Anthony Zakhary and Gavin Logher each gathered a single assist.

Reid Lazou scored for Norwich with help from Parker Noble and Hayden McLean.

Hespeler outshot Norwich 35-24, but was scoreless on three power plays. Norwich went 1-for-3 on their power play and the Shamrocks netted a shorthanded goal.

Joseph Clark was the winning goalie for the Shamrocks with 23 saves while Austin Strom had 31 saves for Norwich.

The win allows the Shamrocks (6-12-1-0) to leapfrog Norwich (4-10-3-1) into fifth place in the Doherty Division standings.

The Shamrocks get a bit of time to savour the win as their next outing is set for Dec. 8 at home against the Wellesley Applejacks. Game time at the Hespeler Memorial Arena is 7:30 p.m.
