Shamrocks yield three in a row in third in loss to Port Dover
PORT DOVER – The Hespeler Shamrocks surrendered three consecutive goals in the third period as they dropped a 6-2 decision to the Port Dover Sailors in Provincial Junior Hockey League play at the Port Dover arena.
Port Dover scored the only goal of the first period and led 2-1 after the second.
Austin Reilly and Kyle Yetman scored the goals for the Shamrocks while assists went to Josh Houston, Dylan Beitz and Matthew Hayward.
Port Dover received single goals from Dylan Stroud, Tyler Heisey, George Kapralos, Owen Kosovo, Austin Grech and Nicolas d’Agostino. Dylan Stroud and Ben Mason each had two assists while Hayden Butler, d’Agostino, Martineau Elijah, David Palmer and Brett Stroud had one each.
The Sailors outshot the Shamrocks 30-24 and neither team scored a power-play goal, Hespeler on six power plays and Port Dover on two.
Max Parrott had 24 saves in net for the Shamrocks and Andrew Hawkins had 22 for Port Dover.
The game meant nothing in the final Bloomfield Division standings as Hespeler (15-19-5-3) had already clinched a fifth-place finish and Port Dover (13-26-2-1) was already assured of a seventh-place finish.
The Shamrocks are to play the fourth-place Dundas Blues (18-19-4-1) in the division’s quarter-finals. The series is to start with games in Dundas Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Game 3 is to go at the Hespeler Memorial Arena Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
Hespeler and Dundas split their regular-season series, each team winning twice with two games ending in overtime ties. The Shamrocks won 5-3 at Dundas Oct. 3 and 3-1 at home Nov. 24. Dundas won 2-0 at Hespeler Sept. 22 and 6-3 at home last Thursday. The teams tied 2-2 at Dundas Dec. 5 and 3-3 at Hespeler Jan. 24. The Blues outscored the Shamrocks 17-16 in the season series.
