Shelburne hits first in triumph over Elora Rocks

ELORA – The Elora Rocks surrendered the first three goals of the game to the Shelburne Muskies as they suffered a 6-4 setback in Western Ontario Athletic Association senior men’s hockey play Friday night at the Elora and District Community Centre.

After a scoreless first period, Shelburne jumped ahead 4-2 by the end of the second.

Spencer Gourlay scored twice for Elora while Ed Gaffney and Brendan Farrugia added the other goals. Lyam Cripps and Chad Herron each had two assists while Brett Coverdale and Sam Bilton had one each.

Blake Lovell collected two goals and three assists for Shelburne while Trevor Vanalstine, Jamie Bennett, Jeff Noseworthy and Brandon Richardson scored once each. Chris Greer picked up a pair of assists while single assists were awarded to Vanalstine, Bennett, Luke Richardson and Nate King.

Austin Hoegy had 31 saves in the Elora net while Ryan Mantle had 28 for Shelburne.

The Muskies move to second with the win at 15-3-0-0. They’re a point behind the Ripley Wolves (15-3-1-0), but have a game in hand.

The Rocks are 10th at 7-10-0-1 and trail the eighth-place Minto 81’s (9-7-0-1) by four points. Top eight qualify for the league championship portion of the playoffs.

The Rocks are to play the fifth-place Tillsonburg Thunder (12-5-0-1) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Tillsonburg Memorial Arena.
