Shell gives Gryphon hockey women season-opening win

WATERLOO – Karli Shell’s goal in overtime lifted the Guelph Gryphons to a 2-1 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks in their OUA women’s hockey league season opener Friday night at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.

Shell, who had scored the game’s first goal on a power play in the first period, netted the winner 36 seconds into overtime.

Kaitlyn Hatzes scored for Laurier late in the second.

Miranda Lantz, Madison Melo, Claire Merrick and Mallory Young each had an assist for the Gryphs.

Rebecca Haddaway and Emily Woodhouse picked up assists for Laurier.

The Gryphs were outshot 33-26 and went 1-for-2 on their power play while Laurier was scoreless on two power plays.

Valerie Lamenta made 32 saves for the win in the Guelph net while Laurier’s Cohen Myers was charged with the loss. She made 24 saves.

The Gryphs are to host the Waterloo Warriors (0-1-0-0) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.
