Shootout win keeps Gryphons in playoff hunt
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons kept their slim chances of qualifying for the OUA men’s hockey league playoff alive as they nipped the Brock Badgers 4-3 in a shootout Thursday night in their Aggies Night/Seniors Night game at the Gryphon Centre.
In the shootout, Jacob Winterton of the Gryphs struck for the lone goal while Brock couldn’t get the puck into the net behind goalkeeper Colton Incze on their three shots.

The win by the Gryphs combined with a 3-0 win by the Laurier Golden Hawks over the Western Mustangs leaves the Gryphs, Laurier and Western tied for sixth in the West Division with 25 points apiece with one game to go. The York Lions are at 23 points with two games to go.
This season the top six qualify for the playoffs, down from the usual eight.
For the Gryphs to get the playoff berth, they can’t be tied with anyone as they’ll lose every tie-breaker as the first tie-breaker is the number of wins and the Gryphs have less than the others in the race for the final spot. Guelph has nine wins while Western has 10, York 11 and Laurier 12.
While the Gryphs are to close out their regular season Saturday night with a game at York against the Lions, the locals can be eliminated by then as Laurier is to play the 10th-place Waterloo Warriors (6-16-1-2) Friday at Waterloo. However, Laurier and Waterloo split their previous two games, Waterloo winning 6-2 at their Columbia Icefield arena Nov. 4 and Laurier won 5-3 at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex Nov. 26. Friday’s game is to be played at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.
Thursday, the Gryphs scored first, but Brock led 2-1 at the end of the first period before a scoreless second. The Gryphs scored a pair of goals in the third period, before Tyler Burnie’s goal at 18:13 of the third created a seven-minute overtime that went scoreless.
Cameron Searles, Zachary Poirier and Ted Nichol scored the regulation-time goals for Guelph while Cole Cameron, Emmett Gordon, Nichol, Poirier and Ethan Doyle each had an assist.
Jared Marino and Jordan Stock also scored for Brock. Adam Berg and Jacob Roach each had two assists while Johnathon Schaefer and Ethan Sims each had one assist.
The Badgers outshot the Gryphs 37-30. Incze made 34 saves while Roman Basran of the Badgers had 27.
The game at York Saturday is to start at 7:30 p.m.
