Short-staffed Rocks dropped by Saugeen Shores
PORT ELGIN – The short-staffed Elora Rocks surrendered four goals in the second period as they were handed a 7-4 setback by the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks in Western Ontario Athletic Association senior men’s hockey play Saturday night at the Port Elgin Sportsplex.
The Rocks had 11 players suited up for the game including two goaltenders.
The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the opening period before Saugeen Shores shot ahead 5-1 by the end of the second.
Elora did get the gap down to 6-4 with just under three minutes to go in regulation time, but the Winterhawks netted the game’s final goal with eight seconds to play.
Kris Dobinson, Spencer Gourlay, Brett Coverdale and Klayton Hoelscher each had a goal for the Rocks while Ed Gaffney had two assists and Gourlay, Sam Bilton and Corey Flemington had one apiece.
Miles MacLean had a pair of goals for Saugeen Shores while single goals were added by Andy Mitchell, Michael Johnstone, Blake Underwood, Connor Patton and Trent Hawke. Nick Quaid, Underwood, Patton and Lauchlin Elder each had two assists while single assists went to Johnstone, Jamie Shoemaker, Trevor Smith and Hawke.
Saugeen Shores outshot the Rocks 52-18 and held a 39-8 advantage in that category after the second period.
Jeff Flagler picked up the win in the Winterhawks net while Colin Dunne took the loss in the Elora net.
The Rocks fall to 7-8-0-1. They’re tied for ninth with the Minto 81’s who are at 7-7-0-1.
Saugeen Shores moves into a tie for first with the victory. The Winterhawks are at 13-3-1-0, but have played one more game than the Ripley Wolves (13-2-1-0).
The Rocks have six games to go in the regular season.
They’re to play the Minto 81’s at the Palmerston arena Saturday at 8 p.m.
