Shorthanded goals power Patriots to victory in series opener
MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots struck for three shorthanded goals as they downed the Mitchell Hawks 5-2 in Provincial Junior Hockey League playoff action Wednesday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
The match was the opening game of the best-of-seven Pollock Division semifinals and featured 92 minutes in penalties including five misconducts. Mitchell took 64 minutes including four of the misconducts.
The Patriots failed to take advantage of Mitchell’s penalties as they were scoreless in 11 power plays while the Hawks went 2-for-8 on their power play.
Mount Forest never trailed in the game, their first of the playoffs as they had a bye in the quarter-finals after finishing first in the division at the end of the regular season. The hosts were ahead 4-2 at the end of the second.
Ryley Cribbin had a pair of goals for the Patriots while singletons were netted by Hayden Coulter, Jack Birkett and Michael Stefanelli. Chet Philips assisted on three of the goals while Cribbin, Riley Torrie, Blair Jenkins, Derek Williams and Blair Butchart each had one assist.
Ethan Hill and Tanner Hertel scored the power-play goals for Mitchell. Assists were awarded to Braeden Burdett, Jake Finlayson and Jarett Bogdon.
Mitchell outshot the Patriots 37-36.
Gleb Poliakov turned aside 35 shots to get the win in the Mount Forest net while Seth Monkhouse had 31 saves for Mitchell.
Second game of the series is set for Saturday at Mitchell. Game time is 7:15 p.m.
