Single-run innings give Royals fourth consecutive win

GUELPH – The Guelph Royals struck for single runs in five innings as they topped the Barrie Baycats 5-1 in Intercounty Baseball League play Tuesday night at Hastings Stadium.

The win was the fourth in a row for the Royals (25-11) and leaves them in third place, a game and a half behind the leading London Majors (27-10). The Welland Jackfish (26-10) are second, a game ahead of the Royals.

The win also secured home field in at least one round of the IBL playoffs as they can finish no lower than fourth.

The Royals shot ahead for good with a run in the first inning. Their other runs came in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

Barrie’s run came in the sixth.

Conner Morro led at the plate with a solo homer and two doubles while Claudio Custodio, playing in right field, had a double and two singles. Noah Roberts hit a double while J.D. Williams, Justin Interisano, Ethan Hammond and Kyle Kush each hit one single.

Barrie was held to four hits – a double by Ryan Rijo and singles by Owen Jansen, Jake Wilson and Carson Burns Burns.

Jeifry Nunez picked up his first win for the Royals. He limited Barrie to one hit and one walk in five innings. He also had six strikeouts.

Evan Chenier, Emilis Guerrero, Brandon Deans and Andrew Case each pitched an inning. Chenier surrendered the earned run off two hits while Deans also gave up a hit. Guerrero retired all three batters he faced while Case faced four batters. Case had three strikeouts while Chenier, Guerrero and Deans each had two.

Adam Khan took the loss for Barrie. He yielded three earned runs off five hits and two walks. He had five strikeouts.

Aidan Rossel surrendered five hits and an earned run and struck out there in an inning.

Evan Soules gave up an earned run off a hit and three walks in three innings. He also had three strikeouts.

The Royals are to host the fourth-place Toronto Maple Leafs (21-15) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Hastings Stadium.
