Six more champs crowned in football festival

GUELPH – The OFSAA Football Bowls Series festival wrapped up Wednesday with six more bowl champions crowned on the final two days of the provincial competition.

The winners were the Thomas A. Stewart Griffins of Peterborough in the Independent Bowl, Sir Wilfrid Laurier Rams of London in the Western Bowl, Bishop Tonnos Titans of Ancaster in the Golden Horseshoe Bowl, St. Matthew Tigers of Orleans in the National Capital Bowl, Frontenac Falcons of Kingston in the Eastern Bowl and Korah Colts of Sault Ste. Marie in the Northern Bowl.

Second day of the festival Tuesday was mainly an overcast and cool day while Wednesday’s third day was a mixed bag of weather. It started with rain in the morning game that turned to a light flurry during the middle match and heavier flurries in the late match and a strong wind affected all games.

 

Western Bowl

Sir Wilfrid Laurier 13 Huron Heights 12

The marquee matchup of the festival featured the top two teams in the province as rated by canadafootballchat.com. Huron Heights was ranked first in the country and Laurier was ranked eighth in the country.

However, Laurier won the match on the very last play of the game when the Rams scored a rouge after kicking the ball into the end zone and preventing the returnee from getting out of the end zone, bringing the returnee down about a foot into the end zone, right in front of the goal post.

The game had been close throughout. Huron Heights led 7-6 at the end of the first quarter and Laurier led 12-7 at halftime. Huron Heights closed the gap to 12-9 in the third quarter and tied it late in the fourth quarter before the Rams won it with the rouge.

Brian Bennett and Seth Raymer scored the TDs for Laurier.

Brandon Quigley scored the TD for Huron Heights while Hayden Doris kicked a field goal and a convert. The Warriors also scored a safety.

 

Golden Horseshoe Bowl

Bishop Tonnos 30 A.N. Myer 3

The Tonnos Titans ran away with the match with a total of 20 of their points being scored in the middle quarters.

Myer entered the game ranked 20th in the country, one place ahead of Tonnos.

Elliot Blake had two TDs for Tonnos while Francesco Romano had three field goals and three converts.

Aiden Hunt had a field goal for Myer.

 

Eastern Bowl

Frontenac 15 Belle River 9

Two teams ranked in the top 30 in the country — Frontenac 27th and Belle River 28th – looked like they were going to turn it into the Rouge Bowl earlier in the match as they kicked one apiece in the first quarter before the Belle River Nobles added another one early in the second quarter.

The Nobles led 9-1 at halftime, but were held scoreless in the second half. Frontenac Falcons scored two TDs, both by Jet Zakrewski, in the third quarter to complete the scoring in the game. Cameron Owen had two converts and a rouge.

Dayton Canto had Belle River’s lone TD while Matteo Trifon had a convert and two rouges.

 

National Capital Bowl

St. Matthew 24 Northern 15

St. Matthew came back in the second half to claim the win.

St. Matthew entered the game ranked 34th in the country while Northern was ranked 49th.

Northern led 7-1 at the end of the first quarter, 14-3 at halftime and 15-10 at the end of the third quarter before St. Matthew scored two TDs in the fourth quarter for the win.

Christos Zigoumis, Jackson Plante and Hugo Djeumeni had a touchdown apiece for St. Matthew while Victor Nwadike Dim kicked three converts and a rouge. The Tigers also had a safety.

Sheadenn Bowerbank and Lennox Nizami each had a TD for Northern while Johnny Musson had two converts and a rouge for the Red Knights.

 

Northern Bowl

Korah 52 Jacob Hespeler 14

The Korah Colts claimed their fourth consecutive bowl victory with the one-sided win in the final game of the festival.

Korah was ranked 17th in the country, four places behind the CWOSSA champion Jacob Hespeler Hawks.

The Colts scored on their first two possessions of the game using mainly a running attack that averaged around eight yards a carry. They also held the Hawks scoreless in the second half.

Korah led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter, 35-14 after the second quarter and 38-14 after the third quarter.

Running backs Kaylob Thibodeau and Ronan Provenzano scored all the TDs for Korah as Thibodeau had four of them and Provenzano had the other three. Ty Koski converted all seven TDs and also kicked a field goal.

Jenson Button and Chase Judge scored TDs for the Hawks while Armaan Jass had two converts.

 

Independent Bowl

Thomas A. Stewart 48 St. Michael’s College 7

Stewart Griffins grabbed the lead with a TD in the first quarter of the game between two unranked squads.

The Griffins led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter, 27-7 at halftime and all the scoring in the game was complete after the third quarter.

Nathan Thomson struck for four TDs for Stewart while Colby Wood had a pair of touchdowns and Jordon Feeley had one. Lucas Barnett kicked six converts.

Gavin Green had the TD for the St. Michael’s Kerry Blues while Marco De Luca booted the convert.
