Slow start costly for Guelph Regals

THOROLD – The Guelph Regals fell too far behind to recover as they dropped a 10-7 decision to the St. Catharines Spartans in Ontario junior B lacrosse league play Sunday at the Thorold Community Arena.

The Regals trailed 7-0 after the opening minute of the second period and they were behind 10-2 a minute into the third period before getting five goals in six minutes and 45 seconds to complete the scoring.

Ethan Keleher had a hat trick for the Regals while single goals were added by Tyler Beecraft, Grant Patterson, Shane Halliwell and Aiden Marroni. Marcus Keleher and Halliwell each had four assists and Ethan Keleher, Patterson and Beecraft had one apiece.

Sam LeClair scored four times for St. Catharines while Blair Pachereva netted a pair of goals. Connor Aquanno, Mitchell Geoffroy, Alex Gaston and Jacob McMillan completed the scoring with single goals while Aquanno had four assists, Gaston and Pachereva had three each, LeClair had two and Carter Geoffroy, goalkeeper Austin Paddy, Nick Gicante and Nathan Sneath each had one.

The Spartans outshot the Regals 56-48 and went 4-for-10 on their power play while the Regals were 4-for-9 on their power play.

Brady Wilson was charged with the loss although he made 46 saves. Paddy had 41 saves for St. Catharines.

The Regals finish their opening week of the regular season at 0-2-1 while St. Catharines improves to 2-1-0.

The Regals have three games this week, too, as they’re to play the Owen Sound North Stars (1-3-1) at Owen Sound Wednesday at 8 p.m., host the Welland Generals (0-4-0) Friday at 8 p.m. and the Windsor Clippers (3-1-1) Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Victoria Road arena.
