Slow start leaves Blitz trailing Stratford in quarter-final

ERIN – The Erin Blitz fell behind 2-0 in their best-of-five WOSHL quarter-final playoff series with the Stratford Fighting Irish Sunday night at the Centre 2000 arena.

Stratford scored twice in the first period and that proved to be the difference as the Blitz fell 3-1.

Former Guelph junior B player Cameron Stokes scored 37 seconds into the game for the Fighting Irish and Matt Fuller added a power-play goal midway through the period. Cooper Leitch secured the victory with another power-play goal midway through the third.

Jacob Miller scored for Erin early in the second with help from Sean Caruso and Joey Warywoda.

Graham Brulotte had two assists for Stratford while Stokes, Ray Robbins and Mitchell Casey each had one.

The Fighting Irish outshot Erin 32-27 and went 2-for-9 on their power play while the Blitz were scoreless on 10 power plays.

Jacob Tugnutt had 29 saves for the hosts while Zack Weir had 26 for Stratford.

Game 3 is set for Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Stratford’s William Allman arena.

If the Blitz win that game, the fourth game is to go Sunday at Centre 2000 at 6 p.m.

If a fifth game is needed, it’s scheduled for March 15 at 8:05 p.m. at Stratford.
