Slow-starting Erin Blitz dropped by Tillsonburg

TILLSONBURG – A slow start cost the Erin Blitz as they were handed a 7-3 setback by the Tillsonburg Thunder in WOSHL play Saturday night at the Tillsonburg Community Centre.

Tillsonburg scored four goals in the first period on its way to the win.

The Thunder led 4-1 at the end of the first period and 6-2 after the second.

Lucas Schott had a pair of goals for the Blitz while Liam Galton had the other one. Hayden Ireland, Maxwell Lightfoot, Jeff White, Beni Berisha and Joseph Franzin each had one assist.

Scoring a goal apiece for the Thunder were Derek Slaught, Kaine Geldart, Jordan Kobayashi, Mike Rebry, Chris McGuffin, Jacob Brown and Jamie MacQueen. Brendan Barletta had three assists while Slaught and Mitch Brown each had two assists. Single assists were awarded to Justin Abraham, Kobayashi, Matt Weston, Chris Nauts and MacQueen.

Tillsonburg outshot the Blitz 38-31 thanks to a 16-9 advantage in the first period. Andre Roy had 31 saves in the net for Erin while Matt Sagrott had 28 saves for the Thunder.

Erin went 1-for-3 on the power play while the Thunder was scoreless on two power plays.

The Thunder are fourth in the standings at 16-6-1-0 with one game to go. They’ll finish fourth.

The Blitz are sixth at 6-12-1-2 with three games to go and will finish anywhere from sixth to eighth. They can’t catch the Strathroy Jets (13-9-2-0) who are fifth and have finished the regular season. Erin is a point ahead of both the Plattsville Lakers and Alvinston Killer Bees who have identical 6-16-1-1 records.

The Blitz are to play the Lakers at the Plattsville arena Sunday at 3:30 p.m. before hosting a pair of games next weekend as they’re to play Alvinston Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and the ninth-place Delhi Flames (2-19-0-1) next Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the final game of the league’s regular season.
