Slow-starting Thistles clouted by Brantford

BRANTFORD – The Fergus Thistles gave up the first eight goals of the game as they were dropped 12-5 by the Brantford Warriors in Ontario junior C lacrosse league play Sunday at the Gretzky Complex.

Brantford led 3-0 at the end of the first period and 8-1 after the second.

Justin Beaulieu had two goals and two assists for Fergus while J.J. Swanston, Brett Harrison and Logan Cameron added single goals. Trent Spear, Swanston and Harrison each had one assist.

Cooper Day-Allison collected a hat trick for Brantford and Cole Robillard and Brayden Doxtator netted two goals apiece. Getting one goal each were Blake Dunford, Austin Garlow, Max Lewis, Jaden Drage and D.J. Martins. Robillard, Herman Wagnleithner, Michael Comeau and Connor Merritt each had two assists and Nick D’Amico, Dunford, Drage, Day-Allison, Lewis, Martins and Quinn Drysdale gathered one each.

The hosts outshot the Thistles 48-31 and Fergus went 1-for-15 and Brantford went 1-for-20 in the penalty-filled game. A total of 142 minutes in penalties were called with the Thistles whistled for 78.

Mitchell Dunham made 26 saves for the win in the Brantford net while starter Kent Bremner took the loss for Fergus. He stopped 22 shots in the first half of the game and Tyson Reeves stopped 14 in the second half.

The Thistles fall to 4-4-0 with the loss and Brantford improved to 5-2-1 with the win.

The Thistles are to host the Six Nations Warriors Thursday at 8 p.m. at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex.
