Snow day makes Thursday busier high school sports day
GUELPH – Wednesday was going to be a busy high school sports day, but not now. The cancellation of school buses brought about a postponement of every game that was to be played.
Now that makes Thursday a busy high school sports day – busier than it was scheduled to be on Wednesday. So busy that we’re wondering who’s going to be left at school to go to classes.
There are three championship tournaments now set for Thursday.
The District 10 curling championships at the Guelph Curling Club was originally to be a two-day affair with last Thursday (Feb. 7) being the first day and Tuesday being the second. Last Thursday was a snow day so it was decided to turn it into a one-day gig on Tuesday. However, that was a snow day, too, and now it’s back to being a two-day event with Thursday being the first day and next Tuesday the second day.
The District 4/10 wrestling championships were to go at Erin District High School Wednesday. They’re now slated for Thursday.
And Thursday is the date for the District 4/10 swimming championships at the University of Guelph pool.
The D10 boys basketball quarter-finals are now set for Thursday. They’ve been postponed twice.
Senior games are Bishop Macdonell at Centre Wellington at 1:30 p.m., Guelph CVI at Lourdes at 2:15 p.m., Ross at St. James at 3:45 p.m. and Orangeville at Centennial at 4 p.m.
Junior games are Orangeville at Lourdes at 3:45 p.m., Bishop Macdonell at Ross at 4 p.m., Centre Wellington at Centennial at 5:30 p.m. and St. James at Guelph CVI at 5:30 p.m.
Both senior and junior semifinals are now scheduled for Friday with the finals Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. The junior final is to go at 6 p.m. and it’s to be followed by the senior final at 6 p.m.
The final day of the D4 regular season has now been shifted to Thursday with both senior and junior leagues having three games to play. Semifinals in both leagues are now scheduled for Friday with the finals in both leagues to go Tuesday.
The D10 girls volleyball semifinals have been moved to Thursday. Senior features St. James at Guelph CVI at 3:45 p.m. and Orangeville at Ross at 4 p.m. Junior semifinals have Bishop Macdonell playing at Guelph CVI at 3:45 p.m. and St. James playing at Ross at 5:30 p.m. Friday’s finals are to be played at the University of Guelph with the junior final slated for 6 p.m. and the senior final following at 8 p.m. The finals are to be played in the Mitchell Athletics Centre’s West Gym.
D4 girls volleyball leagues have adjusted their championship schedule to be a single-day affair Friday in both senior and junior. The semifinals are to go at 11 a.m. and the final at 1 p.m. in both. The seniors are to play at Norwell and the juniors at Erin.
The D4/10 boys’ hockey league is to complete its regular season with a single game Thursday — Wellington Heights vs. Orangeville at Tony Rose arena at 1 p.m. That game will decide whether it’ll be Westside or Wellington Heights that hosts Centennial in an opening-round playoff game Friday.
The D10 girls’ hockey league playoffs are to start with a pair of quarter-finals Thursday at 2:30 p.m. St. James is to play Centennial at Centennial arena while Guelph CVI is to play Lourdes at Exhibition arena.
