Soccer: Gryphon men edged by Dalmacija

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons surrendered a late goal to be edged 1-0 by HNNK Dalmacija in their Ontario Soccer League Provincial West season opener Thursday night at Eastview Park.

John Lozano scored the game’s only goal with less than five minutes to play.

The teams battled scoreless until then as they both took turns attacking, although the visitors held play in the Guelph end for most of the first 25 minutes of the second half. The Gryphs launched most of their attacks after that.

Next up for the Gryphs is a game against Olimpia Toronto (0-0-0) at Mississauga June 8.


Ontario Women’s League Provincial South

The Guelph Gryphons handed the Burlington Bayhawks a 3-1 setback Thursday night at the Gryphons Soccer Complex.

Danielle Sauve, Megan Sullivan and Hayley Howes struck for a goal apiece for the Gryphs.

Alexandra Petermann scored for Burlington.

The Gryphs improve to 2-1-0 with the win while Burlington falls to 0-2-0.

Guelph is to host Hamilton Sparta (0-1-0) June 8 at the Gryphons Soccer Complex. Game time is 9 p.m.


Ontario Women’s League Provincial U21 South

Both Guelph Gryphon squads in the division suffered one-goal losses to Niagara United opponents.

The Gryphs Red were edged 3-2 by NU White at Niagara while the Gryphs Black were nipped 2-1 by NU Blue at the Centennial Bowl.

Monica Sanago and Kristin Kohlmeier scored a goal apiece for the Gryphs Red while Taylor Campbell, Jessica Mercnik and Sydney Sica collected single goals for NU White.

Larissa Pirillo had the lone goal for Gryphs Black while Alyssa Dicienzo scored both goals for NU Blue.

NU Blue leads the eight-team league at 3-0-1 while NU White is third at 2-1-1. Gryphs Black are fifth at 1-2-0 and Gryphs Red seventh at 0-2-0.

Gryphs Black are to host Kitchener Spirit (1-1-1) June 8 at Eastview Park at 8:45 p.m. while Gryphs Red are to play Waterloo United (0-3-0) at RIM Park Tuesday at 9 p.m.
