
Spartans clip Gaels in field hockey playoff opener
GUELPH – The Centennial Spartans opened the District 4/10 high school girls’ field hockey’s quarter-finals by slipping by the Bishop Macdonell Celtics 3-1 Wednesday at the University of Guelph’s Varsity Field.
While the Spartans had finished fifth in the standings with five points, one point behind the fourth-place Celtics, they had defeated Bishop Mac on their opening day of the regular season.
In the playoff match, Keely O’Connor, Abigail Milne and Tristan Helps had a goal apiece for Centennial.
Holly Emeny scored for Bishop Mac.
The Spartans advance to face the Ross Royals in Monday’s semifinals.

Ellen Bouwman had the lone goal of the game as the third-place Falcons edged the sixth-place Royals of Shelburne.
Centre Wellington is to play Orangeville in Monday’s semifinals.
Semifinal victors advance to next Wednesday’s final.

The second-place Bears received goals from nine players — Marika Witt, Ruby Dickinson, Hannah Stamper, Brianna Price, Addison Stenzel, Nikola Adsetts-Adams, Rachel Mugford, Caitlin Mount and Ana Dimovska.
Halle Pulley and Heidi Woolcott scored for the seventh-place Gaels.

Leah Penner connected for four goals to lead the first-place Royals to the shutout win over the eighth-place Wolverines. Cecilia Lee, Amber Spira and Mara Scott added single goals while Helena Born picked up the shutout in net for Ross.
