Spartans hit for first win of baseball season

GUELPH – The Centennial Spartans picked up their first win of the District 4/10 high school baseball season Monday when they dropped the Westside Thunder 11-0 at Pearson Park.

Thomas Devereaux, Justin Philp and Oscar Koroiz combined their efforts on the mound to pitch the Spartans to the win. Devereaux had five strikeouts and yielded a single hit in three innings while Philp had two strikeouts as he tossed a hitless inning and Koroiz also had two strikeouts in a scoreless inning pitched.

Ben Widdecombe, Matthew Cutten, Michael Guardiero and Uryu Sakamoto each had two hits for Centennial while Devereux and Ben Smith had one apiece.

Kyle Fraser picked up the win on the mound for the Celtics who recorded their first victory of the season. Owen Sartor led at the plate as he had two hits and drove in two runs. Hayden Wesseling had a hit and scored a run while Jacob McWhirter and Garrett Thornton each had a hit and C.J. Baes and Caden Young each scored a run.

Bryan Richardson was tagged with the loss for St. James while Liam Karn and Bryce Burgess each had a hit.
