Spartans keep title in own junior hoops tourney

GUELPH – The Centennial Spartans captured the championship of their own Spartan Classic junior boys’ basketball tournament presented by Campus Estates Animal Hospital Saturday as they downed the St. Benedict’s Saints of Cambridge 73-51 in the final.

The Spartans grabbed the lead in the first quarter and never let it go. The hosts were up 16-10 at the end of the opening quarter, 36-21 at halftime and 55-34 at the end of the third quarter.

Centennial also had its long-range shooting down as the Spartans hit 13 three-point shots.

Johnny Beaton led the locals with 24 points while Will Glaspell had 15, Maddux Martin 11, Jaylen Phillip 10, Fraaz Kamaldeen six, Will McKenzie five and Johnny Green and Max Macerollo one apiece.

Centennial defeated Northern 67-54 in the semifinals earlier in the day while St. Benedict’s edged Brantford CI 52-49.

In Friday’s opening two rounds, the Spartans defeated Georgetown 63-33 and King’s Christian 68-44.
