Spartans runners-up in own junior tournament

GUELPH – The Centennial Spartans finished as silver medalists in their own Centennial Spartan Classic junior boys’ basketball tournament Saturday.

The Spartans were defeated by the MacNab Lions of Hamilton in the final.

After holding a slim three-point lead (18-15) at the end of the first quarter, MacNab pulled away to a 40-28 lead at halftime that they stretched to 62-41 by the end of the third quarter.

Sebastian Harman-denHoed led Centennial with 17 points while Shaan Uppal and Johnny Beaton each had eight and Jaylen Philip and Aidan Wassilyn each netted six.

Centennial gained its berth in the final with a 63-57 victory over the Saltfleet Storm in the semifinals.

The Spartans got off to a quick start in that one, leading 21-8 at the end of the opening quarter. The hosts were up 36-27 at halftime and 46-39 at the end of the third quarter.

Beaton hit for 22 points to lead Centennial while Harman-deHoed had 13. Philip netted 12 and Jackson Davidson contributed 11.

The Spartans are undefeated in District 10 league play this season as they’ve won all six of their matches. They’re to complete the first half of their league schedule Tuesday with a home game against the Guelph CVI Green Gaels (5-1).
