
Spartans score top spot in Pool B in field hockey
GUELPH – The goal-scoring prowess of the Centennial Spartans gained them a first-place finish at the end of Thursday’s Pool B play in District 4/10 high school girls’ field hockey.
The Spartans and Centre Dufferin Royals of Shelburne finished with identical 2-0-1 records and the tie was broken by considering goals scored during the day – seven for the Spartans and four for the Royals.
Guelph CVI Green Gaels were third at 1-2-0 and Wellington Heights Wolverines of Mount Forest fourth at 0-3-0.
Centennial and Centre Dufferin completed play with a scoreless tie in the final game of the day. The Spartans had earlier downed GCVI 3-0 and Wellington Heights 4-0 while Centre Dufferin defeated both the Gaels and Wolverines by 2-0 scores.
All four teams in the pool advance to the opening day of the playoffs set for Monday at Centennial and all are to play Pool A opponents in the quarterfinals.
The quarterfinals are to start at 9:30 a.m. while consolation games are to go at 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Semifinals are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Semifinal victors are to return Wednesday for the 4 p.m. championship match.

Sophie Tonin tallied twice for Centennial while Abigail Milne and Mackenzie LeBlanc added single goals.
