Spartans silver medalists at CWOSSA AAA hoops tourney
KITCHENER – The Centennial Spartans capped off their senior boys’ basketball season as CWOSSA AAA silver medalists.
The Spartans fell to the defending champion Eastwood Rebels of Kitchener in the championship match Monday at Kitchener’s Cameron Heights CI.
Eastwood pulled away in the second half for a 71-55 victory. Kai Clarke of the Spartans hit a long three-pointer at the buzzer to cut Centennial’s gap to Eastwood to two points (36-34) at halftime.
Centennial came out hot to start the second half as the Spartans scored nine consecutive points to shoot into the lead, but the Rebels fought back to tie it at 46 with part of a 17-3 run that put Eastwood ahead 53-46 at the end of the third quarter.
The teams traded baskets early in the fourth quarter before Eastwood pulled away to the final 16-point winning margin.
Jackson Wallace led Centennial’s scoring with 19 points while Clarke netted 16.
Ladera Ujullu Obang connected for a game-high 26 for Eastwood while J.J. Adigun had 17 and Julian Eichler had 11.
Eastwood advances to be the CWOSSA representative at next week’s OFSAA provincial AAA high school championship tournament at Burlington.
Centennial gained its berth in the CWOSSA final with a 69-64 victory over the Huron Heights Huskies of Kitchener in the semifinals.
Clarke had 20 points in that game and Wallace collected 15.
