Spartans slip by Bears to claim first-place finish
GUELPH – The Centennial Spartans clinched a first-place finish and the accompanying bye in the quarter-finals as they slipped by the Orangeville Bears 43-40 Thursday on the final day of the District 10 high school senior girls’ basketball league’s regular season.
Jessica Zhu had 12 points for the Spartans.
Alicia Bowering collected 12 for the Bears.
Centennial finished first at 11-1 while Orangeville and the St. James Lions finished at 9-3. Bishop Macdonell Celtics were fourth at 7-5 and were followed by the Ross Royals at 4-8, Centre Wellington Falcons at 2-10 and Guelph CVI Green Gaels at 0-12.
Orangeville was awarded second and St. James third as the Bears defeated the Lions both times they met in the regular season.
Tuesday’s quarter-finals have Ross playing at Bishop Mac, GCVI playing at Orangeville and Centre Wellington playing at St. James. All three are to start at 4 p.m.
Winners advance to Thursday’s semifinals while the championship game is set for Saturday at the University of Guelph.

While individual point totals were not kept, Frances Wolkensperg led the Centre Wellington attack and Eve Elford led GCVI.
Centre Wellington grabbed the lead in the first quarter and held it throughout the game. The Falcons were up 8-6 at the end of the first quarter, 20-17 at halftime and 37-25 after the third quarter.
It was the second time Centre Wellington reached 50 points in a game this season while GCVI’s total was their highest single-game total of the season.
St. James 55 Bishop Macdonell 36
Grace Mencfeld connected for 16 points for St. James while Olivia Brown had 12 and Lauralee Mackeigan added eight.
Alicia Higgins had a game-high 22 for BM and Madeline Tavares collected four.
Guelph CVI 51 Centre Wellington 14

GCVI completed an undefeated run through the regular season as the Gaels finished first at 12-0 and were followed by Ross at 10-2, Centennial at 8-4, Orangeville at 5-7, Centre Wellington and Lourdes Crusaders both at 3-9 and St. James at 1-11.
GCVI gets a bye in Tuesday’s quarter-finals while St. James plays at Ross at 4 p.m., Lourdes plays at Centennial at 5:30 p.m. and Centre Wellington plays at Orangeville at 5:30 p.m.

Ryann Hay had 12 points for Centennial.
Taya Williamson hit for eight for Orangeville.
Ross 48 Lourdes 18
Susannah Morris collected 15 points for Ross while Devin Eddy contributed 14 and Maren Mau chipped in with 11.
Ronette Eimar and Eden McQueen each had four for Lourdes while Tolu Adeosun had three.
