Spartans start their field hockey season with win, tie

FERGUS – The Centennial Spartans opened their District 4/10 high school girls’ field hockey season with a win and a tie Wednesday at Centre Wellington.

The Spartans battled the Centre Dufferin Royals of Shelburne to a scoreless standoff in their season opener and then slipped by the host Centre Wellington Falcons 1-0.

Mara Castellejo and Kassi Hogan shared the shutout in the tie with Centre Dufferin.

Shannan Armstrong had the clean sheet for Centre Dufferin.

Lea Diaz had the lone goal in the game with Centre Wellington.

The Spartans are looking for their first league title since 2014. They were tied for fifth last season at 2-4-1 and ousted from the semifinals by the eventual champion Ross Royals.

Madison Bender and Daislynn McCracken struck for a goal apiece for Centre Wellington.

Tori Sodoma tallied for Centre Dufferin.

Leah Penner scored twice for three-time defending champion Ross. Abby Auger had the other goal while Acacia Douglas Henke recorded the shutout.
