Spartans top Lions in senior hoops, will host quarter-final match

GUELPH – The Centennial Spartans are assured of hosting a game in the District 10 high school senior girls’ basketball league’s quarter-finals as they’ll finish either second, third or fourth in the seven-team league.

Tuesday, the Spartans assured themselves of winning a tie-breaker with the St. James Lions should the two teams end the regular season in a tie.

A 39-36 victory by the Spartans over the Lions Tuesday gave Centennial a sweep of the two-game regular-season series between the two teams.

Sarah Cobey connected for 15 points for Centennial while Jocelyn Newby added 10.

Grace Mencfeld had a game-high 23 for St. James while Payton Cathcart collected seven.

Bishop Macdonell Celtics have secured a first-place finish and are a perfect 10-0 on the D10 season. Orangeville Bears (7-2), Centennial (7-3) and the St. James Lions (5-4) will fill the next three positions in the final standings while the bottom three will be the Ross Royals (2-7), Guelph CVI Green Gaels (1-8) and Lourdes Crusaders (1-9).

The league is to complete its regular season next week.

Krista Gott led Orangeville with 16 points while Alicia Bowering added 14 and Breanne Murray also hit double digits with 13.

Sami Romero had seven for Lourdes.

 

Bishop Macdonell 72 Ross 33

Rachel Guanzon struck for 14 points for Bishop Mac and Maja Gadzinska chipped in with 12.

Sarah Hopkins had seven for Ross and Abby May netted five.

 

Junior

Guelph CVI 49 Centre Wellington 40

Eve Elford’s 25 points led GCVI while Amandeep Jawanda contributed seven.

Kara den Hoed had 15 for Centre Wellington and Sadie Sinclair hit for nine.

 

St. James 38 Centennial 14

Elivia Garbuio had 18 points for St. James.

Trinity Burke had four for Centennial.
