Spartans top Royals to stand as lone unbeaten squad in senior hoops

GUELPH – And then there was one.

The Centennial Spartans stand as the lone undefeated squad in District 10 high school senior boys’ basketball play after they handed the previously unbeaten Ross Royals a 77-67 setback Thursday at Ross.

The Spartans came back from a single-point deficit at the end of the first quarter to shoot ahead for good in the second quarter of the tense match.

“It was very physical,” Centennial coach Rob Conroy said. “Any time you come in this building it’s physical. (Ross coach) Bill (Price) does a good job with his guys. They’re hard on the boards and it’s a tough gym to win in.”

While the battle was for first place, the Spartans didn’t place any extra emphasis on it.

“We still haven’t seen (Lourdes Crusaders) so we don’t know what to expect so we’re just taking it one day at a time,” Conroy said.

Ross led 19-18 at the completion of the opening quarter before Centennial grabbed a 40-31 lead by the end of the first half. The Spartans remained ahead 54-48 at the end of the third quarter.

Jackson Wallace led Centennial with 21 points while Cameron Powell had 19, Kai Clarke added 16 and Sebsatian Harman-den Hoed had eight.

Gatlang Pout led all scorers with 28 points for Ross while Cole Miller had 19 and Ryan Kielar chipped in with nine.

Centennial leads the league at 6-0 while Ross and Lourdes are tied for second at 5-1. St. James Lions are fourth at 3-3 while the Bishop Macdonell Celtics and Guelph CVI Green Gaels are tied for fifth at 2-4, Centre Wellington Falcons are seventh at 1-5 and Orangeville Bears trail at 0-6.

“We’ve played a lot of basketball so we’re ready for a break,” Conroy said. “We’re looking forward to Christmas.”

The Spartans and most of the rest of the D10 teams will be in action at the University of Guelph Friday and Saturday in the second annual Tom Heslip tournament. Championship match is set for Saturday at 6:10 p.m.
