Spartans vault to top of senior hoops standings
GUELPH – Centennial Spartans jumped to the top of the District 10 high school senior boys’ basketball league’s standings Tuesday with a 71-56 victory over the St. James Lions.
The Spartans top the standings at 4-1 while the Centre Wellington Falcons are at 3-1 and the Lions and Ross Royals are both at 3-2. Lourdes Crusaders and Guelph CVI Green Gaels are both at 2-2 while the Orangeville Bears are at 1-4 and Bishop Macdonell Celtics are at 0-4.
Centennial outscored St. James in each of the four quarters as the Spartans led 17-14 at the end of the first quarter, 35-28 at halftime and 56-45 after the third quarter.
The Spartans had four players hit double figures as Cam Powell had 18 points, Kai Clarke and Hadi El-Miari each had 16 and Jake Warywoda netted 14.
Matt Sanvido led all scorers with 23 for St. James while Alex Garbuio chipped in with 12 and Dorion Simpson contributed nine.
The Spartans are to complete the 2018 portion of their season with a trio of home games as they’re to host Orangeville Thursday, GCVI Dec. 18 and Bishop Mac Dec. 20.

Brock Newton struck for 25 points for Centre Wellington while Zach Cudmore netted 18.
Rowan Steele had 18 for Orangeville and Brandon Hughes added nine.

The Spartans had their three-point shot working as they dropped 10 of them in the match.
Centennial grabbed the early lead and never looked back as they led 23-8 at the end of the first quarter, 44-21 after the second quarter and 66-49 after a third quarter in which the teams combined for 50 points.
Jackson Davidson led Centennial with 18 points while Johnny Beaton and Jaylen Phillip each had 13, Sebastian Harman-den Hoed added 11 and Shaan Uppel had nine.
David Farrelly connected for 29 for St. James while Kelvin Nkubito chipped in with 15 and Dylan Leidl had four.

Gatlang Deng netted 18 points for Ross while Dominic Vanos had 13.
Rimez Kridli led Bishop Mac with 16 and Nathan Perry had eight.
Orangeville 77 Centre Wellington 74
Cole Purdell-Lewis collected 23 points for Orangeville while Keelan Steele had 15 and Gregor Lawson and Montague each had 11.
Owen Fox hit for a game-high 33 for Centre Wellington while Owen Williams had 17 and Gareth Roberts added 12.
