Ross Royals nipped in CWOSSA AAA girls’ final

BRANTFORD – The Ross Royals were edged 20-12 by Owen Sound DSS in the CWOSSA high school AAA girls’ rugby championship match Friday.

The District 4/10 runners-up reached the final with a pair of wins in pool play Wednesday as they slipped by Brantford CI 14-12 and dropped Kitchener CI 51-5.

 

Guelph Redcoats women split with Aurora Barbarians

MARKHAM – The Guelph Recoats made it two wins in as many Ontario Women’s League firsts play by edging the Aurora Barbarians 22-19 Saturday at Fletcher’s Field.

The Redcoats scored four tries in the match, one more than the Barbarians.

Aurora won the seconds match 45-28. The Barbarians scored seven tries while the Redcoats scored four.

Guelph is 2-0-0 in firsts play and 0-2-0 in their first season of seconds play.

The Redcoats are to host the Peterborough Pagans next Saturday at the Guelph Lakes Sports Fields. The seconds are to go first at 11 a.m. and the firsts are to play at 12:30 p.m.

 

Guelph Redcoats men swept by Brantford Harlequins

BRANTFORD – The Guelph Redcoats suffered a 49-29 loss to the Brantford Harlequins in Rugby Ontario Marshall Men’s Division firsts play Saturday at Harlequins Field.

The Redcoats had four tries while the Harlequins scored nine.

Brantford also won the seconds match 55-10. The Harlequins also had nine tries in that match while the Redcoats had two.

Guelph is 1-1-0 in firsts play and 0-2-0 in seconds play.

The Redcoats are to host Waterloo County in their home opener next Saturday at the Guelph Lake Sports Fields. The seconds are to play at 2 p.m. and the firsts are to start at 3:30 p.m.

 

Fergus Highland women take their season opener

FERGUS – Fergus Highland opened their Niagara Rugby Union women’s season with a 63-7 triumph over the Sarnia Saints Saturday at Victoria Park in Fergus.

Highland had 11 tries in the match, 10 more than Sarnia.

Fergus forfeited the B division match.

Highland is to play the Burlington Centaurs at Burlington’s Sherwood Forest Park next Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

 

Fergus Highland men dropped by Sarnia to start campaign

FERGUS – Fergus Highland was handed an 81-12 setback in their Niagara Rugby Union A division play Saturday at Victoria Park in Fergus by the Sarnia Saints.

Sarnia had 13 tries in the match while Highland scored two.

Highland is to play the Stratford Blackswans at Stratford’s Army, Navy & Air Force Veterans next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. for the A division match and 2 p.m. for the B division match.

Puslinch Predators U21 women edged in season opener

PUSLINCH – The Puslinch Predators suffered a 3-2 loss to Kitchener TFC in their Southwest District Soccer League U21 Women’s season opener Thursday at Badenoch Field.

Emilea Evans-Kania and Annette DeGroot struck for a goal apiece for the Predators. Scoring once each for Kitchener were Cleo Graves, Anne Rumble and Katherine Nusca.

Next up for the Predators is a game at Orangeville Lions Sports Park against Storm FC Thursday at 9 p.m.

 

FEDS United U21 men downed by Stratford Strikers

STRATFORD – FEDS United was handed a 3-1 setback by the Stratford Strikers in Southwest District Soccer League U21 Men’s play Thursday at Stratford’s Festival Hydro Park.

Aidan Mead connected for the goal for FEDS.

Ethan Barel, Luke Gaylor and Ben Piro Defehr had a goal apiece for the hosts.

The loss was the second in as many outings for FEDS while the win lifted Stratford to 1-2-0.

FEDS are to host FC Berlin (1-1-0) in their home opener Thursday at Victoria Park in Fergus. Game time is 9 p.m.

Junior Gryphons win three of four in OSFL play

LONDON – The Guelph Junior Gryphons claimed their first win of the Ontario Summer Football League’s U18 season Saturday with a 38-0 victory over the Forest City Thunderbirds at Westminster Secondary School. They’re 1-1-0 on the season.

The Junior Gryphs were given a 17-6 setback by Forest City in U16 play Saturday at London. The Junior Gryphs are 0-2-0 on the season.

The Junior Gryphs opened their U12 season with a 30-0 victory over the Peel Panthers at Alumni Stadium Saturday.

The Junior Gryphs also opened the U10 season with a 39-6 win over the Peel Panthers Saturday at Alumni Stadium.

Next Saturday, the Junior Gryphs are to host the Brampton Bulldogs at 7 p.m. at Alumni Stadium in U18, Brampton at 4 p.m. at Alumni Stadium in U16, Chatham-Kent Cougars at 1 p.m. at Alumni Stadium in both U14 and U12 (one has to change) and Niagara Generals at 10 a.m. at Alumni Stadium in U10.
