St. James Lions dump Green Gaels in season opener

GUELPH – The St. James Lions broke open a close game with five runs in the fourth then brought it to an early end with eight runs in the fifth on District 4/10 high school baseball’s opening day Monday at Pearson Park.

Those runs helped the Lions down the Guelph CVI Green Gaels 16-1.

St. James never trailed in the game as they scored their other three runs in the top of the first inning while GCVI’s run came in the bottom of the first.

The Lions had 10 hits in the match and were aided by five errors by the Gaels and five walks. Ethan Dennie and Liam Karn each hit a double and a single while Hayden LeGrand had two singles and Aiden Edmonds smacked a double. Bryan Richardson, Cameron Hewitt and Bryce Burgess each had a single.

Adam Geddes scored GCVI’s run as he walked, went to second on a catcher’s interference call, went to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on a sacrifice fly. He also hit an infield single later in the game for the only hit for the Gaels. Lions pitchers recorded 10 strikeouts.

The defending champion Spartans dropped the Thunder at Orangeville’s Princess of Wales Park.
