Stevens starts Gryphon hockey men on way to win over Windsor
WINDSOR – A pair of first-period goals by Marc Stevens started the Guelph Gryphons on their way to a 3-2 victory over the Windsor Lancers in OUA men’s hockey play Saturday at Windsor’s Capri Ice Complex.
Stevens hit for two goals just over two and a half minutes apart by the time the game was 11 minutes old to give the Gryphs a 2-0 lead by the end of the first period.
However, Windsor tied it early in the second period when Trent Fox and Anthony Salinitri scored exactly one minute apart before the second period reached the 3:30 mark.
Ryan Da Silva fired home the game-winner for the Gryphs just over two and a half minutes after Salinitri tied it.
No goals were scored in the final 33 minutes of the match.
Ryan Valentini picked up two assists for Guelph while Zach McFadden, Mikkel Aagaard and Stevens each had one.
Connor Matton, Salinitri, Kody Gagnon and Fox each had an assist for Windsor.
The Gryphs outshot the Lancers 42-20 and went 1-for-5 on their power play while Windsor was 1-for-2.
Brendan Cregan had 18 saves for the win in the Gryphon net, his second in as many days and second of the season.
Jonathan Reinhart stopped 39 shots, but was tagged with the loss in net for Windsor.
The game completed the 2019 portion of the schedule for the Gryphs.
They’re tied with the Brock Badgers for fourth in the West Division, but have a game in hand on Brock. The Gryphs are at 9-4-3-0 and Brock’s at 10-6-1-0. Windsor is second at 12-4-0-1.
The Gryphs will begin the 2020 portion of their schedule with a pair of home games against the sixth-place Lakehead Thunderwolves (7-7-2-0). They’re to play at the Gryphon Centre Jan. 3 at 1 p.m. and Jan. 4 at 7:30 p.m.
