Storm again standing at brink of elimination

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm again find themselves on the brink of elimination in the OHL playoffs following a 4-1 loss to the Saginaw Spirit Wednesday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The win gives Saginaw a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference final. The Storm gained their berth in the conference final by winning four consecutive elimination games to come back from a 3-0 deficit to the London Knights in the conference semifinal.

Wednesday, the Spirit scored once in the first period and twice in the second before Dmitri Samorukov scored Guelph’s lone goal at 4:45 of the third. Nick Suzuki and Sean Durzi assisted on the power-play goal.

Saginaw added another goal seven minutes later to complete the scoring in the game.

Cole Perfetti scored twice for the Spirit while Reagan O’Grady and Owen Tippett added single goals. Damien Giroux, O’Grady, Brady Gilmour, Albert Michnac and Tippett each had one assist.

The Storm outshot Saginaw 37-26 and went 1-for-5 on their power play while the Spirit went 1-for-3 on their power play.

Anthony Popovich had 22 saves as he took the loss in the Guelph net. Winning goaltender Tristan Lennox had 36 saves for Saginaw.

Fifth game of the series is scheduled for Friday at Saginaw’s Dow Event Center. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
