Storm and Rouyn-Noranda to meet in semifinal

HALIFAX – The Guelph Storm are to face the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies In Friday’s Memorial Cup semifinal.

Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champion Rouyn-Noranda slipped by the QMJHL finalist and hosts Halifax Mooseheads 4-3 Thursday night in the final game of the championship tournament’s round-robin segment.

The result left the Storm, Rouyn-Noranda and Halifax tied atop the standings at 2-1.

A tie-breaker formula only considered games between the tied teams and took each team’s goals scored divided by the its total of goals for and against. It left the Storm and Halifax tied as both had scored seven goals and yielded six.

The next tie-breaker was the result between Halifax and Guelph and the Mooseheads won 4-2 Sunday.

The semifinal is set for 7 p.m. Friday.

Thursday, Rouyn-Noranda led 2-0 at the end of the first period and trailed 3-2 after the second. The Huskies scored twice in the third when they outshot the Mooseheads 18-2.

Félix Bibeau, Joël Teasdale, William Rouleau and Jakub Lauko scored a goal apiece for Rouyn-Noranda while Alexis Arsenault had two assists and Lauko, Peter Abbandonato, Mathieu Gagnon, Justin Bergeron and Rafaël Harvey-Pinard had one each.

Scoring for Halifax were Benoit-Olivier Groulx, Arnaud Durandeau and Antoine Morand. Getting one assist each were Durandeau, Justin Barron, Jared McIsaac, Joel Bishop, Keith Getson and Maxim Trépanier.

Winner of Friday’s semifinal will face Halifax in Sunday’s 7 p.m. final.
