Storm bounces back with win over Kitchener
GUELPH – The Guelph Storm made sure it wasn’t a total losing weekend as they handed the Kitchener Rangers a 5-2 setback in Ontario Hockey League play Sunday at the Sleeman Centre.
The Storm had started the weekend with a 5-0 loss to the Rangers at Kitchener Friday night and were also defeated 5-2 by the Owen Sound Attack at Owen Sound Saturday night.
Sunday, Nate Schnarr’s goal in the opening minute of the second period broke a 2-2 tie and was the first of two Storm goals in the period. The hosts scored once in the third, an empty-netter with 1:15 to play.
Schnarr and Isaac Ratclife each scored a pair of goals for Guelph while Owen Lalonde netted the other one. Dmitri Samorukov assisted on two of the goals and Ryan Merkley, Schnarr, Ratcliffe and Liam Hawel each collected one assist.
Jonathan Yantsis and Rickard Hugg scored for Kitchener while Joseph Garreffa, Greg Meireles, Riley Damiani and Chase Campbell each had one assist.
The Storm outshot the Rangers 42-33 and went 2-for-5 on their power play while Kitchener was 1-for-4 on its power play.
Anthony Popovich made 31 saves for the win in the Storm net while Luke Richardson stopped 37 shots in the Kitchener net.
The Storm vaults back into first place in the Midwest Division with the win. They’re at 7-4-1-0 while Kitchener is second at 6-4-2-0 and the London Knights (6-4-1-0) and Owen Sound (6-5-0-1) are tied for third. The Erie Otters (4-6-1-0) are fifth.
The Storm is to host Erie Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
