Storm clobbered by Kitchener, on brink of elimination


The Guelph Storm fell behind in their Ontario Hockey League Western Conference quarter-final playoff series with the Kitchener Rangers when they were hammered 10-2 Friday night at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.

The result gives Kitchener a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series that has seen the home team win each time out.

The Rangers scored three times in the first period and the first five goals of the game on their way to a 7-1 lead at the end of the second period.

Zach Poirier and Isaac Ratcliffe scored for the Storm while assists were awarded to Liam Hawel, Keegan Stevenson, Garrett McFadden and Dmitri Samorukov.

Adam Mascherin had a hat trick for Kitchener while Kole Sherwood, Connor Bunnaman and Jonathan Yantsis each scored twice and Joseph Garreffa added a single goal. Riley Damiani and Rickard Hugg each had three assists while Logan Brown and Giovanni Vallati each had two and Givani Smith, Garreffa, Mascherin, Bunnaman, Austin McEneny, Sherwood and Adam Liška had one apiece.

Sherwood’s goals give him seven for the series.

Kitchener outshot the Storm 22-9 in the second period and 49-34 overall. The Rangers were 2-for-8 on their power play while the Storm went 1-for-6.

Anthony Popovich took the loss in net for the Storm. He started and made 32 saves in the first two periods while Nico Daws played the third and made seven saves. Mario Culina had 32 saves to get the win for Kitchener.

Sixth game of the series is set for Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre. If the Storm wins that game, the seventh and deciding game of the series is to be played Tuesday at Kitchener. Game time is 7 p.m.

Three of the league’s first-round series have wrapped up. The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds swept the Saginaw Spirit 4-0, Owen Sound Attack swept London Knights 4-0 and Hamilton Bulldogs ousted the Ottawa 67’s 4-1.
