Storm clouted by Rangers in playoff opener

KITCHENER – The Guelph Storm surrendered five goals in the first period as they were dropped 7-2 by the Kitchener Rangers in their first Ontario Hockey League playoff appearance since 2016.

The Rangers led 5-0 at the end of the first period at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium and 6-1 after the second.

Nate Schnarr and Isaac Ratcliffe scored the goals for the Storm while assists went to Liam Hawel, Ryan Merkley and Schnarr.

The Rangers received goals from Jack York, Adam Mascherin, Greg Meireles, Joseph Garreffa, Riley Damiani, Kole Sherwood and Michael Vukojevic. Mascherin, Damiani and Logan Stanley each had two assists while Kyle Gentles, York, Garreffa, Logan Brown and Givani Smith had one apiece.

Kitchener outshot the Storm 43-38 and scored on its only power play. The Storm went 1-for-4 on their power play.

Anthony Popovich took the loss in net for the Storm as he yielded six goals on 30 shots in the first two periods. Nico Daws played the third and allowed one goal on 13 shots.

Mario Culina picked up the win as he made 36 saves for Kitchener.

Second game of the series is set for Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.
