Storm clouted to drop another afternoon home game

GUELPH – The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds scored three goals in a span of two and a half minutes late in the second period on their way to a 7-1 drubbing of the Guelph Storm in Ontario Hockey League play Saturday afternoon at the Sleeman Centre.

It was the third consecutive home loss in an afternoon game for the Storm. They had won their first three afternoon home games.

After a scoreless first period, the Greyhounds were up 2-1 when Morgan Frost netted the first of the quick trio of goals with 5:05 to go in the second. Frost added another goal 1:41 later and former Storm defenceman Noah Carroll scored for the Hounds 49 seconds after that to give Sault Ste. Marie a 5-1 lead by the end of the period.

Isaac Ratcliffe had scored for the Storm at 9:20 of the second. Cam Hillis assisted on the goal.

Frost and Barrett Hayton, son of former Guelph Platers defenceman Brian Hayton, scored twice each for the Hounds while Ryan Roth, Noah Carroll and Joe Carroll had single goals. Noah Carroll and Mac Hollowell each had three assists while Frost had two and Hayton, Jacob LeGuerrier, Rasmus Sandin, Hayden Verbeek and Hayden Fowler had one apiece.

Sault Ste. Marie outshot the Storm 39-26 and both teams were 0-for-2 on their power plays.

Matthew Villalta was the winning netminder for the Hounds as he made 25 saves. Anthony Popovich took the loss for the Storm after stopping 23 shots in the first two periods. Nico Daws played the third and stopped nine of the 11 shots he faced.
