Storm deal Givani Smith to Rangers for draft picks

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm have traded right winger Givani Smith to the Kitchener Rangers for a trio of second-round draft picks.

Sunday, the Storm received picks in the 2021, 2024 and 2025 drafts. The 2025 pick could become a second-round pick in the 2020 draft depending on Smith’s performance with the Rangers.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Smith had eight goals, three assists and 14 penalty minutes in 19 games with the Storm this season and 64 goals, 48 assists and 355 penalty minutes in 178 regular-season games with the Storm. He also had two goals, three assists and 18 penalty minutes in nine playoff games with the Storm in the 2014-15 season.

Smith, who’ll turn 20 next month, had been selected in the first-round, 13th overall, by the Barrie Colts in 2014 and was traded to the Storm in January of 2015 after getting four assists and 20 penalty minutes in 31 games with Barrie.

Smith was picked in the second round, 46th overall, by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2016 NHL draft.

The OHL trade deadline is Wednesday.

A total of 25 players and 40 draft picks have changed teams in deals since New Year’s Eve.
