Storm drops season opener in overtime
WINDSOR – A goal by Luke Kutkevicius of the Windsor Spitfires two minutes into overtime gave the Guelph Storm a 4-3 setback in their 2018-19 Ontario Hockey League season opener Thursday night at the Windsor Family Credit Union Arena.
The Storm had led 3-2 with seven minutes to play, but Windsor rallied for the win.
After a scoreless first period, Windsor shot ahead 2-1 in the second before the Storm grabbed the lead on a pair of goals by Liam Hawel. However, Windsor’s Will Cuylle scored 65 seconds after Hawel’s second goal to square the score and eventually force the overtime.
Nate Schnarr scored the second-period goal for the Storm. Assists in the game went to Isaac Ratcliffe, Mark Woolley, Schnarr, Owen Lalonde, Keegan Stevenson and Ty Collins.
Lev Starikov and Mathew MacDougall also scored for Windsor while Kutkevicius, MacDougall, Luke Boka, Cody Morgan, Tyler Angle, Jean-Luc Foudy and Nathan Staios each had one assist.
The Storm outshot Windsor 46-29 and neither team scored on its power play, Guelph on six power plays and Windsor on two.
Anthony Popovich was charged with the OT loss in net for the Storm while Kari Piiroinen claimed the win for Windsor.
The Storm is to host the Sudbury Wolves in their home opener Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre. The game is to be Sudbury’s season opener.
