Storm dumped by Sting, give up three goals per period

SARNIA – The Guelph Storm surrendered three goals in each period as they were hammered 9-1 by the Sarnia Sting in OHL play Wednesday night at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena.

It was the third time this season the Storm has yielded at least nine goals in a game as they were Beaten 10-6 by the Saginaw Spirit in Saginaw Oct. 1 and 9-5 by the Flint Firebirds in Flint Nov. 5.

The Storm’s largest single-game output this season is seven goals from a 7-2 victory over the Erie Otters Jan. 6 at the Sleeman Centre.

Wednesday, Sarnia led 3-0 after the first period and 6-0 after the second.

Former Sting forward Max Namestnikov scored the lone goal for the Storm 56 seconds into the third period. Jake Karabela and Matthew Poitras assisted on the play.

Nolan Burke scored four goals for Sarnia while Luca DelBelBelluz had two and Easton Wainwright, former Storm forward Sasha Pastujov and Zach Filak added single goals. Ethan Del Mastro and Ty Voit each had three assists while Wainwright, Christian Kyrou and Pastujov each had two and Filak and former Storm forward Marko Sikic had one each.

The Sting outshot the Storm 38-23 and went 2-for-4 on their power play while the Storm were scoreless on two power plays.

Patrick Leaver had 10 saves for the Storm in the first period while Brayden Gillespie had 19 in the final two periods. Benjamin Gaudreau had 22 for Sarnia including one on a penalty shot by Romeo Chandler late in the second period.

The Storm (24-23-4-1) are tied for sixth in the Western Conference with Flint (24-25-4-1), but have two games in hand on the Firebirds. Sarnia is third at 27-17-4-2.

The Storm are to host Saginaw (tied for fourth in Western Conference at 27-21-2-1) Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre. They’re also to play the Oshawa Generals (eighth in Eastern Conference at 22-23-1-4) Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Oshawa and host the Owen Sound Attack (tied for fourth in Western Conference at 26-19-4-1) Family Day Monday at 2 p.m.
