Storm edged by Erie Otters in shootout

ERIE, Pa. – A day after beating the Erie Otters in a shootout at the Sleeman Centre, the Guelph Storm was edged by the Otters in a shootout at the Erie Insurance Arena Saturday night.

Erie’s Kyle Maksimovich and Taylor Raddysh scored in the shootout to give Erie a 5-4 victory.

After surrendering three goals in the first period, the Storm rallied to tie it with three of their own in the second and Guelph went ahead on a goal by Cam Hillis midway through the third. That lead lasted about two and a half minutes until the Otters tied it to force overtime and eventually the shootout.

Hillis had a big game for the Storm as he was involved in all four goals, finishing with two goals and two assists. Dmitri Samorukov and Isaac Ratcliffe scored the other goals while Alexey Toropchenko had two assists and Nate Schnarr, Ryan Merkley, Garrett McFadden and Ratcliffe had one each.

Alex Gritz scored twice for Erie while Gera Poddubnyi and Maxim Golod netted single goals. Golod, Taylor Raddysh and Jordan Sambrook each had two assists and Cade Robinson and Christian Girhiny had one each.

The Storm outshot Erie 30-27 and penalties proved to be costly as Guelph went 2-for-3 on its power play and the Otters scored on both of their power plays.

Nico Daws took the loss in net for the Storm while Anand Oberoi was the winning goaltender for Erie.

The result leaves the Storm (6-6-0-2) and Otters (6-6-1-1) tied for third in the Midwest Division, one point behind the Kitchener Rangers (7-6-1-0) and three ahead of the London Knights (5-8-1-0).

The Storm is to complete a three-in-three weekend by hosting the Knights at the Sleeman Centre Sunday at 4 p.m.
