Storm edged by Knights in series opener

LONDON – The Guelph Storm surrendered a pair of goals in the opening period as they were edged 3-2 by the London Knights in the opening game of their Ontario Hockey League Western Conference semifinal Friday night at the Budweiser Gardens.

London led 2-0 at the end of the first period before the teams scored a goal apiece in the second period.

The Storm closed the gap to a single goal midway through the third period, but couldn’t net the equalizer.

Owen Lalonde and MacKenzie Entwistle scored the goals for the Storm while Dmitri Samorukov assisted on both of them. Pavel Gogolev and Isaac Ratcliffe each had one assist.

Liam Foudy, Josh Nelson (a penalty shot while London was shorthanded) and Kevin Hancock scored for London. Evan Bouchard had two assists and Hancock and Alex Formenton had one each.

The Storm was outshot 39-24 and both teams had a power-play goal, the Storm on five power plays and the Knights on four.

Anthony Popovich made 36 saves in net for Guelph while Jordan Kooy had 22 saves for London.

Second game of the series is set for Sunday at 2 p.m. at London.
