Storm edged by Saginaw in a shootout

SAGINAW, Mich. – Mason Millman’s goal in a shootout lifted the Saginaw Spirit to a 5-4 victory over the Guelph Storm in Ontario Hockey League play Saturday night at Saginaw’s Dow Event Center.

The game was a see-saw affair with each team taking its turn in the lead, but neither getting a lead of more than a single goal.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and Saginaw led 3-2 at the end of the second. The Storm scored twice in just over three minutes a little after the halfway point of the third period, but Reagan O’Grady scored for Saginaw with 3:39 to go in regulation time.

Overtime didn’t break the tie, setting the stage for Millman’s winning goal in the shootout. He was the 12th shooter in the shootout and the only one to score.

Zach Poirier scored twice in the game for the Storm while Nate Schnarr and Domenico Commisso added single goals. Ryan Merkley assisted on all four goals while Liam Hawel had two assists and Cam Hillis and Tag Bertuzzi had one each.

Blade Jenkins, Camaryn Baber, Cole Coskey and O’Grady had goals before the shootout for Saginaw. Assists were awarded to Nicholas Porco, Brady Gilmour, Ryan Stepien, Millman, Hayden Davis, Albert Michnac, Jenkins and Duncan Penman.

The Spirit outshot the Storm 31-22 and went 1-for-2 on their power play while the Storm went 1-for-5.

Nico Daws was charged with the shootout loss in net for the Storm while Ivan Prosvetov claimed the win in the Saginaw net.

It was the fourth time in five games that a game involving the Storm needed more than regulation time before a winner was decided.

The Storm continues to lead the Midwest Division at 9-4-3-1 while the London Knights (9-4-2-0) and Owen Sound Attack (9-6-0-2) are each two points back.

Saginaw (8-5-1-1) is second in the West Division.

The Storm is to host the Barrie Colts (9-6-1-0) Friday at the Sleeman Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
