Storm edged in overtime by Kitchener Rangers

KITCHENER — Riley Damiani’s goal 13 seconds into overtime gave the Kitchener Rangers a 4-3 victory over the Guelph Storm in Ontario Hockey League play Friday night at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium complex.

The Storm had led by a pair of goals early in the second period, but needed a goal by Isaac Ratcliffe with just over two and a half minutes to go in regulation time to get the game into overtime after the host Rangers had scored three consecutive goals to shoot ahead.

Guelph scored the only goal of the first period and the teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the second. The Rangers scored at 4:06 of the third to go ahead, but Ratcliffe’s goal at 17:29 tied it.

Liam Hawel and MacKenzie Entwistle scored the other goals for the Storm while Nick Suzuki had two assists and Sean Durzi, Ratcliffe and Markus Phillips had one each.

Jonathan Yantsis, Rickard Hugg and Isaac Langdon scored in regulation time for Kitchener. Joseph Garreffa assisted on three of the goals while Greg Meireles had two assists and Kyle Gentles had one.

Kitchener outshot the Storm 35-32 and went 1-for-2 on its power play while the Storm was scoreless on three power plays.

Nico Daws was charged with the overtime loss in the Storm net. He had 31 saves while winning netminder Luke Richardson stopped 29 shots for Kitchener.

The Storm remains second in the Midwest Division and fourth in the Western Conference at 21-12-4-4. London Knights (27-6-4-1) lead the division and the conference while the Rangers (18-20-3-0) are fourth in the division and eighth in the conference.
